After careful consideration, I have decided to run for Senate in the upcoming election. In asking for your support, I recognize many of you have been on campus for significantly longer than I have. Thus, I would like to share with you two principles which will guide my candidacy and time in office. First, I would listen to what the people of this college have to say and what the upperclassman have to say. While I would actively support many measures, any freshman who seeks the office of Senate must primarily listen. At the same time, I desire to contribute in a humble and respectful way to the ongoing dialogue in the Senate. I will represent the unique perspectives of the incoming students, while remembering that these perspectives must be presented with humility and tempered with the advice of others.
Although I think incoming students should spend most of their time in the Senate learning from those Senators who have the wisdom that only time and experience offer, there are several proposals which I will push the Senate to address in the upcoming term, regardless of how my personal campaign fares.
*Pizza Purchasing Power – While there are several pizza companies which deliver to Patrick Henry College, no significant discount is available to Patrick Henry students. I would like to see a bill which harnesses the significant purchasing power of Patrick Henry College by engaging in a system of collective bargaining that results in financial savings for PHC students.
*Energy Enthusiasm – I believe there is a detrimental lack of caffeine on campus. While caffeine remains a privilege, not a right, the campus community would benefit from an energy drink machine in Founder’s Hall or the new Student Life Center.
*Responsible use of Resources – We must attempt to make the best use of our resources on campus in order to be good stewards and keep operating costs low for the college. Though the campus community largely follows this pattern, I support a more aggressive pursuit of recycling for bottles and plastics in the lounges and the dining hall.
Most importantly, I support the founding vision of this college as embodied in the student handbook and honor code. While no man-made documents can ever achieve perfection, the overarching principles of honor, respect, and faith which this body adheres to must never change. I look forward to speaking with each one of you about my positions on the issues affecting Patrick Henry College.
I ask that you would consider supporting my candidacy.
Respectfully,
Levi W. Swank
